Welcome

The transitional Council of the College of Registered Psychotherapists and Registered Mental Health Therapists is the governing body of a new health regulatory college, currently under development in Ontario.  Members of the Council were appointed in September, 2009 by order-in-council of the Government of Ontario.  Some Council members are practitioners of psychotherapy and others are members of the public.

Under the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991 and the Psychotherapy Act, 2007, the transitional Council is empowered to develop standards and regulations for registration with the College.  The transitional period is expected to last three years, and the College will not be accepting applications from prospective registrants until 2012 at the earliest.

The mandate of the new College, once fully operational, will be to regulate Registered Psychotherapists and Registered Mental Health Therapists in the public interest, striving to ensure that practitioners are competent, ethical and accountable.  Once the Psychotherapy Act is proclaimed and the College is functioning, some members of the governing Council (a small majority) will be elected by College members, and others will be appointed by government.
